In October 2024, the kick-off meeting of the new members of the European Master's in Translation (EMT) took place, at which the network for the period 2024 to 2029 was presented. This network consists of 81 Master's degree programs selected for their quality in the field of translation studies. Faculty 06 in Germersheim has also been a member of the EMT since 2024.

On October 24 and 25, 2024, EMT members from across the EU and beyond gathered in Brussels for their first joint meeting. The highlight of the first day was the presentation of the membership certificates by Christos Ellinides, Director General of the Directorate General for Translation (DGT).

With this successful start, the EMT network is setting an example for the future of translator training and networking with the language industry. Faculty 06 is delighted with the quality award from the EMT and the opportunities that membership opens up.

The topic of the first day was “Translating Poland”. Prof. Agnieszka Biernacka, head of the Institute of Applied Linguistics, acted as host. The program of the colloquium, opened by Prof. Sambor Grucza, led the guests through the history, language and culture of Poland and offered insights into audiovisual and literary translation, EU terminology and institutional translation. The lectures were held in Polish and interpreted into English and French by students.

On the second day, the network meeting was opened by Christos Ellinides, Director-General of the European Commission's Directorate-General for Translation (DGT) and Chair of the EMT Board, under the theme “Empowering Translation with Technology and Training”. Academics, translators and EU representatives spoke about DGT's AI tools and their importance for universities, as well as the selection criteria of EU institutions when hiring translators and interpreters.

The successful and productive EMT Network Meeting 2025 sent its members home with the message to embrace change in the translation industry while preserving valuable traditions, respecting history as well as future developments and “leaving no language behind”.

From 7 to 9 April 2025, Prof. Dr. Christoph Rösener attended this year's JIAMCATT meeting (International Annual Meeting on Computer-Assisted Translation and Terminology) in Geneva as a representative of Department 06.

The annual JIAMCATT meeting was established as a working group of the International Annual Meeting on Language Arrangements, Documentations and Publications (IAMLADP) and enables members of various international universities and organizations to exchange ideas and collaborate in the field of computer-assisted terminology work, translation and interpreting.

The overarching theme of the JIAMCATT 2025 meeting was “Minds and Machines: Solving the Quality Puzzle”. In her opening address, Michelle Keating (Head of the UN Office for Language Services in Geneva) spoke about how, by focusing on practical implementation strategies and technical considerations, JIAMCATT member organizations can create robust systems in which human expertise and machine capabilities work together to improve quality while addressing the specific constraints of international organizations.

This was followed by presentations from some member organizations as well as workshops and panel discussions on various topics, including the impact of artificial intelligence on the future language tool market, computer-assisted quality assurance or the role of artificial intelligence and large language models for translation and interpreting.

Participation in the JIAMCATT meeting once again enabled Faculty 06 to take part in topical discussions and engage in a valuable exchange with other member organizations.

The Power of Human Translation and Interpreting in the Age of AI

In September 2023, the European Union launched a call for applications for membership of the "European Master's of Translation" (EMT) network. The EMT network is a partnership project between the European Commission and higher education institutions that offer Master's degree programs in translation.

The EMT label is a certification for Master's degree programs in translation. The Directorate-General for Translation awards this label to higher education programs that meet jointly agreed professional standards and market requirements.

The selected programs become members of the EMT network. Only universities belonging to the EMT network are entitled to use the EMT label (a registered EU trademark).

A team led by Prof. Dr. Christoph Rösener (Department of General and Applied Linguistics and Translation Technology (ASTT)) prepared the application and submitted the application for the Master's degree course in Translation with a total of four specializations (1. Specialist Interpreting - Social, Medical, Legal, 2. Specialist Translation, Language Management and Artificial Intelligence, 3. Conference Interpreting, 4. Translation - Literature, Media, Culture) in December. The application was approved in June 2024 after a thorough review. For the period 2024-2029, the Master's degree program Translation of the Faculty 06 Translation, Linguistics and Cultural Studies in Germersheim is thus an official member of the "European Master's of Translation" network.

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) (French: Organisation mondiale de la propriété intellectuelle (OMPI)) was founded in 1967 with the goal of promoting intellectual property rights worldwide. Since 1974, WIPO has also been a sub-organization of the United Nations and administers international treaties in the field of intellectual property.

In a collaboration between ASTT and WIPO, terminological entries for the WIPO Pearl database were developed as part of a university course. These entries were made available on September 27, 2023.

The database now contains over 245,000 terms, all of which have been validated by WIPO-PCT language experts. In addition, almost 28,000 terms are linked to other terms within the database and can also be searched on the portal for relations between them.

The updated version contains 440 multilingual terminology entries with over 1,000 terms provided by students from the National University of Córdoba, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Saint Joseph University of Beirut, Astrakhan State University, Herzen State Pedagogical University, Zurich University of Applied Sciences, University of Manchester, University of Newcastle and Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey after WIPO validation.
