CIUTI (Conférence Internationale Permanente d'Instituts Universitaires de Traducteurs et Interprètes) is an association of international universities offering degree programs in translation and interpreting. The aim of its members is to harmonize quality standards in the training of translators and interpreters at the international level and to ensure high-quality training, both in practice and in translation research. Department 06 in Germersheim – at that time still known as the Institute for Foreign Languages and Interpreting – is a founding member of CIUTI.
On May 20 and 21, 2025, the annual congress of the Conférence Internationale Permanente D'Instituts Universitaires de Traducteurs et Interprètes (CIUTI) took place. It was hosted by the Universidad Pontificia Comillas in Madrid. Prof. Dr. Christoph Rösener attended the event as a representative of Department 06 Translation, Linguistics, and Cultural Studies in Germersheim.
Under the theme “Language Mediation in Flux: Assessing the Impact of Generative AI,” the CIUTI Conference 2025 opened the discussion on issues and challenges related to generative artificial intelligence that the translation industry has faced in recent years and continues to face. Speakers from around the world gave presentations on a wide range of aspects of the changing job profile, including changes in the training of translators and interpreters, quality evaluation of AI-generated texts, and ethical standards in the use of artificial intelligence.
The agenda and list of resolutions of the General Assembly are available to university members.
The winner of the CIUTI MA Prize 2024, which honors outstanding theses, was Rebecca Cramp from Macquarie University in Sydney for her thesis “‘Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Raheem’ – What did the Sheikh say? Challenges for Auslan-English interpreters rendering code-switching in Arabic-English Islamic source texts.” Department 06 is proud of its alumna Francesca Lampe, whose thesis “Optimizing the comprehensibility of texts using ChatGPT” received a special mention during the award ceremony. The thesis “Interpretazione di conferenza e IA: Studio sperimentale su Sight-Terp e la consecutiva assistita” by Michele Restuccia (University of Trieste) also received a special mention.
